Vase with leather

Learn how to make your own vase made from leather with this DIY tutorial.

Vase med læder - DIY guide

Step 1

Measure out the height of the vase. Start off with the vase that has the longest diameter.

Step 2

Measure out the circumference of the largest vase and add an additional 2 cm.

Step 3

Cut the leather into an angle. Sketch out the circumference and the height of the vase. Add an additional 2 cm.

Step 4

Cut out a thin strap of the excess leather and use it to measure out the circumference of the vase. Make a marking by using a stabilo pen.

Step 5

Cut the length into the size of the circumference of the vase.

Step 6

Use the excess leather to see, where the markings will be. Start off by making a crease with a Japanese stitching groover with its guide attached and adjusted to 5 mm. Alternatively, you can use a wing divider with set screw. After this, use the 5 mm space maker to mark out the holes that will punctured with an awl. There needs be to an even number of holes. If there isn’t an even number, the first hole must be moved either up or down. When we made this DIY, we started off with 7.5 mm, which fit.

Step 7

Now you are ready to make a crease and subsequently use a space maker before puncturing the leather with an awl. Make sure to puncture the holes in the crease, you made earlier in this tutorial.

Step 8

Now you are ready for stitching. The length of the thread must be approx. 8 times longer than the length, you will be sewing.

Step 9

Flatten the thread between your nail and finger. Put it through the eye of the needle. Put the needle through the thread and lock the thread.

Step 10

Start off by putting the thread through the uppermost stitching hole in each side of the front. Pull the needle through the opposite hole on the back and pull the needle back out through the same hole on the front. This is how you start your cross stitch. The first cross stitch you make will be on the back. Make sure that each cross stitch starts from the same side.

Step 11

Once you have stitched the entire side, you must fasten the thread. To do this, you make three stitches going backwards. Cut off the thread and melt its tips into the leather.

Step 12

This is the finished result. Follow the same method for the two other vases.

Step 13

With the excess leather and the same technique, you can create a couple of leather wraps for oil lamps.
